Lay me down.
We've been sprinting since we hit the edge of town,
overcome at the sight of so much green,
bounding ahead once it was dirt beneath our feet.
Real earth connecting without asphalt in between.
The first meadow we flew through, hands stretched, arms wide,
trying to touch every possible inch of the tall amber waves.
Uncorked imagination from the bottle inside, locked eyes as we acted out
aviation dreams
over feathered grass clouds lifted by jet streams, higher and higher.
Then we reached a creek,
time to trek across Oregon Trail style.
Risk a bridge or wade in knee deep?
I laughed and splashed my way straight through.
You smiled and took the scenic route,
a fallen log turned into the Golden Gate.
Didn't mind wiggling my toes in the water while i waited,
you made it and took my hand.
The forest stood next and this, this was a test.
Like soldiers at command we braved the forbidden jungle,
beasts and mischief hidden among the deep fir pines
and sweet summer saps.
But fear is no master with a guardian like you,
we turned the haunted grounds into a midsummer night's glen,
magic seeping from limb to limb.
Found ourselves an opening, a soft bed of moss,
fireflies creeping out to cheer us on.
We stood side by side, panting through grins,
dusk painting our faces blue and rose.
I whisper "lay me down"
you caress my cheek
run fingertips across my neck and then....
I awoke.
Blinked twice.
Felt you fade.
My hand laying empty, then clenched to a fist.
Sent a tear into the pillowcase,
my dreams seem to keep ending like this.
And the alone is worse with each lover lost,
Gotta try to hold out for when the sun goes down.
Ill meet you where the moss grows us a carpet,
the stars our chandelier.
where you play sonatas on my heartstrings,
a violin in your hands.
Our exodus from all the black, from this chained existence.
So meet me tonight.
I'll get by on the sight of your smile lit by fireflies.
I may be dreaming my life away but hey,
it's worth it.
I don't have any another way to love you, and you,
you're perfect.
Even if it's only in my dreams.
